Billy's Functional Cure
Billy has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a fatal genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscular failure. The out-of-pocket expenses (after insurance coverage) for Billy’s medical care and experimental treatments exceed $35,000 per year.
But, Billy doesn't want people to just give to his medical expense fund. He doesn't want his campaign to be just another fundraiser for just another child in desperate need of medical-financial support. Billy wants to experience the joy of helping others -- to be a blessing, not a burden.
Although Billy is afflicted with a cruel progressive disability, that doesn't mean he can't do great things. Turning his misfortune into something that helps others amounts to a functional cure. Of course, we want Billy to be cured physically, but what Billy wants most is the ability -- the strength -- to help others.
Billy's fundraising campaign is less about the money, and more about helping people help each other get and stay fit -- making life better for everyone. It's a type of social or community cure, whether Billy gets his physical cure or not.
The concept of Muscles for Billy even goes beyond inspiring others people to exercise for a higher quality of life. Muscles for Billy actually helps build stronger organizations and healthier communities. Local fitness volunteers operate Free & Fun Fitness Trainings.
By helping local organizations (schools, churches, and gyms) raise money for their community programs, and by sharing the proceeds with other disabled children, Billy actually gets to give more than he receives.
Billy learned in church: "...you must support the weak..." and... "It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35). Billy wants to do what God made him able to do - support the weak and give as much as he can.
You can help Billy build a meaningful legacy, despite his condition and within whatever time he has. The dual nature of Billy's fundraising campaign enables him to give back to the communities and other affected families that have given him so much love and support.
By working together, participants get healthier and more fit, local organizations raise money for their community programs, and Billy gets to live out his dream of helping others -- not as another charity case, but as a helpful member of an awesome team. Thus, his motto: "Help Me Help You."
Thank you for helping Billy help others. It makes Billy happy, and that's all we really want for him.
Sincerely, Billy's Dad
